The Portland Winterhawks played well during the 2012 season, despite ending with a loss in game seven of the Western Hockey League Championship playoffs. Now, the Winterhawks are attempting to build on their success.
Wimbledon ends
On Sunday, the most important match in the history of British tennis took place, though you will probably only hear it mentioned in passing—something to fill the 53 horrible seconds of an otherwise dead-silent elevator ride with co-workers, or as an offhand attempt at civil discourse with a neighbor over the fence. Maybe just a bit of trivia to take in and file away for use down the road. All we can be certain of is that it will be a mildly pressing development for nearly a full news cycle, and then we will move on.
Between The Horns
I’m told this is a soccer town.
I’m told this with relative frequency, in fact, by prophets young and old, male and female in Portland. I’m told this by people I never asked. I’m told this by the existence of an MLS franchise in place of minor league baseball at Jeld-Wen Field and by the growing number of green jerseys I run into on the MAX lately. I’m told this in a bar at Second and Ash, and then I’m told again 20 minutes later. There is, it would seem, no debate on the matter.
Peg Swadener moves to Willamette
After five years at Portland State, women’s basketball associate coach Peg Swadener is leaving the program to accept a head coaching position at Willamette University.
Summer soccer without the sun
Portland State’s intramural leagues are back in action during summer term as PSU hosts a five-versus-five indoor soccer league starting July 11. The games will be held Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m. on the third floor of the Academic and Student Rec Center.
Heat and Thunder
Going into every single championship series, the talking heads on ESPN and other sports news outlets try to persuade their audiences into thinking each team represents something bigger than the game.
Between The Horns: Amateur Hour Softball in Portland
In a previous “Between the Horns” article, I lamented the absence of baseball in Portland. Having a deep connection with the issue, I wanted to spread the article beyond Portland State’s campus, so I decided to link the online version of the article on Reddit. I didn’t get too many comments, but one Redditor did point me in the direction of Underdog Sports Leagues—an adult, co-ed sports league that caters to bowling, flag football and, most importantly, softball.
The games are coming
After a stubborn, temperamental June, it can be said with relative confidence that summer is finally in full swing. We now begin our tentative and openly giddy transition outdoors, stretching and shuffling out into the light like groundhogs. Sleepy, a bit disoriented, relying on muscle memory to recall how a human being is meant to walk without the benefit of a hoodie and a scowl, we join together in communal appreciation of those precious few months when casual conversation doesn’t have the weather to fall back on anymore.
New recruit for a new season
Portland State women’s golf has added University of Washington transfer A Ram Choi to its roster in an attempt to reclaim the Big Sky Championship in the 2012–13 season.
Incredible run ends short
After breaking Portland State records and going where only one other PSU track and field athlete has gone before, Sean MacKelvie’s season ended short. Right before the senior thrower was about to compete at the 2012 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championship, he injured his elbow while taking a practice throw.
Racing goes green
Electric motorcycles raced against each other at Portland International Raceway over the weekend, but the results of the races were secondary to the movements and ideas they represented.
