Having an affair this weekend

This weekend marks the return of Affair at the Jupiter Hotel, and once again the stylish boutique hotel will play host to Portland’s best established and up and coming art community members at this art fair. It’s hard to believe the effect the Jupiter Hotel and its in-house super bar and venue, the Doug Fir Lounge, have had on Portland in the last year. From grandly entering the scene with last year’s affair, to appearing monthly on the pages of one super-hip magazine or another, the stark modernist lodge has upped the ante in Portland, bridging the gap between the wealth of the Pearl and the forward-mindedness of Portland’s vibrant artistic community. The Doug Fir, while being what many consider a train wreck of Northwest modernist kitsch, has consistently brought acts of the highest caliber, booking brilliant shows that may have easily overlooked an Oregon stop.

This year’s event, curated by Stuart Horodner and Laurel Gitlen, will include galleries ranging from the tried and true (Laura Russo, Alysia Duckler), to the cutting edge (Motel, Gallery 500, Compound) including entries from Seattle, Los Angeles, Houston and San Francisco.

The Affair at the Jupiter Hotel also coincides with the much anticipated opening of Portland Art Museum’s Center for Modern and Contemporary Art, making this a perfect weekend to call in sick to Starbucks and spend some time with Portland art.
