Panel discusses growth of bicycle advocacy

A panel discussion on bike advocacy will take place today in Smith Memorial Student Union, room 296 as part of the ongoing Portland State Bike Challenge Lecture Series.

The discussion, sponsored by PSU Parking and Transportation Services, starts at noon and will feature cycling and transportation authorities from around Portland. They will discuss what makes someone become a bicycle advocate and how interest in bike riding has evolved over the years. The panel will attempt to answer how bicyclists’ interests have grown over the years to include protecting the rights of bike riders in Portland.

Panelists include Meghan Sinnott from Car Free Portland, Tricia Satterlee from the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and Jay Dean from the Community Cycling Center. Ian Stude, PSU transportation options coordinator, will moderate the event.

The event is free and snacks will be provided. It will run from noon to 1 p.m.

Retiring Teri Mariani to be honored Tuesday

After a 33-year career in Portland State Athletics, the retiring Teri Mariani will be recognized Tuesday in a reception held at the Native American Student and Community Center on campus from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Marian began her career shortly after graduating from Portland State in the 1970s. The former three-sport athlete served as head softball coach of the Vikings for 29 years. She has also played a crucial role in the advancement of Portland State athletics, including a 14-month stint as interim athletic director, during which time she hired head football coach Jerry Glanville and helped interview and hire current athletic director Torre Chisholm.

Over the last 14 months, Mariani has served as special assistant to the athletic director, a position that included doing radio and Internet broadcasting for Portland State Athletics.

Mariani led the softball team to a third-place finish at the Division II level in 1991, the team’s highest finish in school history.

Love Indy? Now meet the real thing at Lloyd

Students and faculty within the archaeology department at Portland State, in partnership with local archaeologists, are hosting a weekend-long event at Lloyd Center Cinema, called Archaeology is Here!

The department’s event, scheduled in tandem with the opening weekend of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, hopes to promote and bring public awareness to the field of archaeology. Before and after watching America’s favorite archaeologist on the big screen, moviegoers will have a chance to view local artifacts and archaeology toolkits.

Department members and field professionals will be on-hand, dressed in standard field gear, to answer questions and give insights on working as a professional archaeologist.

A press release issued by the anthropology department says the goal of Archaeology is Here! is to emphasize the importance of archaeology within the region, and to introduce the community to the active archaeologists who regularly work at sites all over the Northwest.

Archaeology is Here! kicked off Thursday afternoon and will run every day until Sunday, from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information on the event, contact Virginia Butler at 503-725-3303.
