An Education
With three Academy Award nominations (Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay) An Education is one of the newer films that you ought not miss. In short, the film is a coming-of-age story about a teenage girl in 1960s London who falls for a man nearly twice her age.
Based off of British journalist Lynn Barber’s autobiographical memoir of the same name, the story was adapted to screenplay by none other than Nick Hornby (he wrote the novel About a Boy). And we love us some Nick Hornby.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
While there are plenty of attractive brunettes and redheads out there, it’s pretty safe to say that gentlemen prefer blondes when that blonde is Marilyn freaking Monroe. With Monroe playing Lorelei Lee (got to love that alliteration), a showgirl hoping to marry a millionaire, there’s nothing not to like about this classic 1953 musical.

My Year Without Sex
It’s that time again: The 33rd Portland International Film Festival starts Thursday. Realistically, there isn’t anything in the fest that isn’t worth seeing, but the pick for Saturday is My Year Without Sex from Australian director Sarah Watt. A follow up to Watt’s first film, Look Both Ways, it’s a comedy that deals with everyday life and family chaos—and who can’t relate to that?

Creepers
If you haven’t seen anything in Cinema 21’s Grindhouse Film Festival presents: The Late Night European Horror Series, then you best get down there on Saturday night, because this is your last chance. This week’s film, Creepers, is a 1985 mind trip. Combining a girl with sleepwalking problems and a telepathic ability to communicate with insects, a serial killer, Iron Maiden and Goblin on the soundtrack, and a chimp acting out revenge with a straight razor, it’s sure to be a what-the-freak-just happened kind of film.
