New vice provost to start fall term
Two weeks ago, PSU Provost Mary Kay Tetreault announced the appointment of Dr. Douglas N. Samuels to the position of vice provost of student affairs this upcoming fall term.
After six years, former Vice Provost Janine Allen will become a full-time instructor in the Graduate School of Education as Samuels fills in her position.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Dr. Samuels to our campus,” Tetreault stated in a press release. “He brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm, and a passion for student support and issues of diversity that PSU needs. We are eager for him to join us and get started on the issues of most importance to our students.”
The vice provost of student affairs is responsible for many elements of campus life. As vice provost, Samuels will oversee the following departments: admissions and records, career services, educational equity programs and services, student development, student health services and financial aid.
According to Tetreault, “Samuels has a deep commitment to both the acedemic and personal sucess of students.”
Prior to this appointment, Samuels was associate dean at Vermont Law School, where he oversaw student affairs and student services and activities, including over 30 student organizations and multicultural affairs. Samuels has had numerous student services positions at the University of Vermont, University of Albany, Illinois State University and George Mason University. He was appointed to the Vermont State Board of Education in 1999. Since last year he has served on the National Association of State Boards of Education.
Samuels is currently concluding his business at the University of Vermont. He, his wife and two children will move to Portland this fall, and he will take his position as vice provost September 4, 2001.
