UPDATE: PSU Student injured in stabbing outside Cheerful Tortoise

PSU student stabbed near campus pub, residence halls

Near a taped-off section outside Cheerful Tortoise Sports Bar and University Pointe at College Station on Thursday, Nov. 9, Portland Police Bureau officers told reporters around 8:30 p.m. the area was blocked off in response to a stabbing incident. The victim, who sustained non-life threatening injuries, is reported to be a 28-year-old male student. Portland State University students on the street witnessed the attack.

[UPDATED 11:20 p.m with the following information from PSU Campus Public Safety]

“On Thursday, Nov. 9 at 8:04 p.m., PSU campus police and Portland police responded to a 911 call of an altercation at the Cheerful Tortoise bar located at 1939 SW 6th Ave. A PSU student was injured during the fight and was transported to OHSU with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was arrested by CPSO and Portland police [sic]. There is no ongoing threat to [PSU].”

A PPB press release indicated the suspect moved to the nearby University Pointe apartment complex, a privately-owned and operated housing building that houses PSU students. Officers took the suspect into custody at UP.

At 8 a.m. on Nov. 10, PPB identified the suspect as 27-year-old Shawntaviou Henderson. Henderson was booked in the Multnomah County Jail on a charge of Assault in the Second Degree and a probation violation for a previous conviction of Manufacture of a Destructive Device.

Second stabbing in two Days in five-block radius of PSU campus

At 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 7, PPB Central Precinct responded to reports that two people had been stabbed near the Outside In health and social services building, located at 1132 Southwest 13th Avenue. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Ruben I. Eustaquio, who was on charges of Assault in the Second Degree (two counts) and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.

At 1 a.m. on Nov. 1, 21-year-old Diego Tejeda-Manzo was shot and killed just off the PSU Park Blocks, at 1717 SW Park Ave & Montgomery. Tejeda-Manzo is said to be a father of a young boy. A GoFundMe campaign has been established in his memory.

Several students in nearby campus housing buildings witnessed the murder. As yet, no arrests have been made in the case.

When first contacted in the 8 p.m. hour, PPB officers said they had no further detail and referred to the incident as falling under PSU Campus Public Safety Officers’ jurisdiction.

CPSO dispatchers in the office at that time offered no further detail and referred the incident back to Portland Police.

Areas surrounding Cheerful Tortoise have been secured by law enforcement since before 11 a.m. today.

The nearby University Pointe, a privately owned and operated housing building that houses students, has also been blocked from the public since this morning.

Officials from Portland Fire Bureau were on site spraying an area outside University Pointe during the time officers spoke to witnesses outside Cheerful Tortoise after 8 p.m.
