Last weekend the only athlete to compete for Portland State was junior Joenisha Vinson at the Mt. Sac Relays in Sacramento, California. Vinson had a strong showing even though she was the lone Viking competitor, as she participated in the heptathlon and swept away the gold.

Vinson’s final score was 5,277 points, which is a new best score for her career by 223 points and is the second best in the PSU record books. With this score, she accomplished her goal of getting qualified for the Big Sky Outdoor Championship, which will be held May 11–14. The NCAA has Vinson ranked at 19for this year’s season. She also sits at being the top ranked in the conference. Her combined score was only 130 points away from beating Robin Unger’s top score of 5,356 points.

Looking at each day, she started off strong by sweeping the competition in the 100-m hurdles with a time of 13.84 seconds, earning her 1,003 points. Not only did she break her own school record with this time, but this was also the first time she has scored over 1,000 points in a given event.

Next she continued her high-point track with scoring 712 and 608 points in the high jump and the shot put, respectively. Her shot-put throw of 36.7 feet was a second PR made. She then concluded day one with the 200-m where she recorded her second best career time of 25.04, giving her 883 points.

One could tell it would be a good meet for her, because at the end of the first day she had already set a new personal record for the most points scored on one day, her day one total being 3,206 points, a whopping 154-point improvement.

Continuing to day two, she threw yet another PR in javelin, by 15 feet, with a mark of 119-9. She also had a new season best in the long jump of 18-5.25. The last event was the 800-m where she was just under a minute shy of her all-time best.

Also, a former Viking, Nick Trubachik competed in the decathlon and his final score was not posted, but by the end of the first day he had 2,230 points.

This weekend, on April 22 and 23, the team gets back together after a week off and will compete at Hayward Field at the Oregon Relays. ?
