Players of the Week: Kahle and Waters

The Vanguard‘s picks for Viking top performers this week in sports.

Kelsey Kahle

Winning Big Sky Player of the Week honors is nothing new to Kelsey Kahle, as senior forward has now won the award 11 times in her career after being named the conference’s top player again on Monday.

Behind three performances of more than 27 points from Kahle, Portland State went 2-1 at home last week and defeated two Big Sky foes in Sacramento State and Northern Arizona in the process.

In the Vikings’ only loss of the week, Kahle scored 30 points against Utah Valley on Dec. 29. The Aurora, Ore., native continued her scoring tear into the New Year, pouring in 27 points in a win over Sacramento State and another 29 points in Sunday’s victory over Northern Arizona.

Kahle finished the week averaging 28.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and two steals per game.

Dominic Waters

It took Portland State a pair of 20-minute halves and four overtimes to finally defeat Northern Arizona 92-91 on Sunday, which gave junior guard Dominic Waters plenty of time to rack up a career-high 41 points. Waters cashed in one more time Monday, as he earned Big Sky Player of the Week honors.

In his sensational performance versus the Lumberjacks, Waters almost single handedly dug the Vikings out of a deficit that reached its peak at 16 points. In the final 2:25 of regulation, Waters scored nine points and then continued his heroics, as his back-to-back three-pointers brought Portland State back in the second overtime.

Over the three games last week, Waters averaged 23 points, 3.3 assists, 1.7 rebounds and one steal per game.
