PSU appoints new librarian

Helen H. Spalding has joined the PSU campus as the newuniversity librarian for the Millar Library beginning March 2005.Spalding is replacing Thomas Pfingsten, who retired last springafter 24 years as director of the library.

Since 1985, Spalding has worked as associate director of theUniversity of Missouri-Kansas City libraries. That institution,like PSU, is an urban university, which should help her make asmooth transition to leading PSU’s Millar library.

Spalding is active in the American Library Association. Throughthat organization, she started the E.J. Josey Spectrum ScholarMentor Program, pairing academic librarians with minorityscholarship students in graduate degree programs.

At PSU, Spalding will advocate for the library on campus and inthe community while providing leadership to over 80 staff members.She will continue her efforts to promote the role of librarians inthe educational process.
