Through November, Portlanders interested in shaping the future of the 80-year-old Sellwood Bridge can participate in an online survey, which showcases possible new designs for the bridge’s replacement.

Those who wish to give their input on the new bridge are encouraged to take the survey, said Mike Pullen, public information officer for Multnomah County, the civic body that maintains the Sellwood Bridge.

The final day of the survey is Wednesday, Nov. 28, and there will be a public forum held at the Oaks Park Dance Pavilion, located at 7805 S.E. Oaks Park Way, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Pullen said attendees will be shown various proposed designs to replace the Sellwood Bridge and there will be a discussion about the timeline and budget for the project.

Pullen predicts that the final budget will figure between $300 million and $400 million. He also said that construction of a new bridge is tentatively expected to begin in 2011.

Following the public forum, Pullen said the Sellwood Bridge Community Task Force will make their recommendation regarding the two or three most popular designs to county officials at a meeting Monday, Dec. 3. County officials will then hold a meeting the following week to announce which designs they will focus on in 2008.

“We’re a ways out yet, but now is the time for the public to get involved,” Pullen said. “Bridge planning may be long, but right now we’re getting the plan underway.”
