SFC to discuss OSPIRG

The Student Fee Committee will discuss at a meeting today whether OSPIRG, a research and advocacy group, will continue to receive student fee funding and will ask leaders of OSPIRG questions about how its budget is managed and spent, according to committee chair Amanda Newberg.

Student Activities and Leadership Programs, the organization that advises student groups, declared that OSPIRG is no longer a student group last week because PSU students do not determine the group’s mission and purpose, and that the group’s primary leaders are not students.

The declaration did not cause the Oregon Student Public Research Interest Group (OSPIRG) to lose funding, but it did restrict them from benefits student groups receive.

The SFC will allocate more than $12 million in student fees this year to the more than 100 student groups, including The Vanguard and athletics. OSPIRG, a subsidiary of the larger group with the same acronym that focuses on interests specific to the state of Oregon, was allocated $128,235 for this year.

Students interested in voicing questions or concerns can attend the meeting today in Smith Memorial Student Union, room 228 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Newberg said.
