Softball bolsters roster

After finishing fourth in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference with a 23-43 overall record, head coach Amy Hayes is bolstering her team’s roster. Hayes signed three junior college transfers for next season’s squad.

The three new Vikings will assist Portland State in its bid to reclaim the PCSC title won in 2006.

Meghan Gendron, a transfer from Mt. Hood Community College, is a 6-foot, right-handed pitcher with one year of eligibility remaining. Last season, Gendron went 20-1 and struck out 97 batters.

Another transfer from Mt. Hood Community College, Jenna Wilson, is a 5-foot-7 utility player from Tualatin, Ore. This past season, she slammed 10 homeruns, compiled 52 RBIs and a .413 batting average.

Kristin Wilson is a catcher and utility player who competed at Walla Walla Community College during the past two seasons. Hitting 15 homers, registering 71 RBIs and a .474 batting average, Wilson was named the National Diamond Catcher of the Year and an All-American as a utility player.

Track and field athletes recognized for academics

Portland State track and field athletes Trevor Rollinger, Caressa Sims and Ashley Quay were recognized for their work in the classroom last Friday.

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association selected Rollinger, winner of the 2007 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships, Sims, a record-setting thrower, and Quay, Portland State’s 2006 Female Scholar Athlete, to the All-Academic Track and Field Teams–a prestigious group of over 600 athletes across the nation. Eligibility requirements include maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.25.

The three Vikings all qualified for the NCAA West Regional Meet in 2007. Junior Westin Morrill, javelin thrower, and freshman Melissa Owens, distance runner, also qualified for the West Regional Meet.
