Student senate looks for new way to fill empty seats

The student senate will consider a proposal to fill empty student government positions by returning to the ranked list of election winners.

The proposal would overturn a recent Judicial Board ruling that incoming executive staff may fill empty seats by appointment once their term of office begins. The board ruled that seats do not become empty until a new administration takes office. The ASPSU constitution stipulates that empty seats be filled by executive appointment.

Currently, there are no known vacancies in student government for the incoming administration. The election list method applies to seats vacated before the new administration takes office June 1.

The potential benefactors are Barron/Craven candidates who did not win a seat in this spring’s election. With the exception of disqualified candidate Cassandra Fowler, every candidate running on the Devaney/Woon slate won. All candidates that could take office under the proposal are associated with the rival Barron/Craven slate.

The senate meets Friday, May 6 at 2 p.m. in the Multicultural Center.
