The Oregon Student Association and the Associated Students of Portland State University hosted their first voter registration tabling event on March 28.
Students gathered around the table located in the Park Blocks around noon to register for the first time or re-register to change their address, name, party affiliation, etc. OSA student volunteers and staff assisted students in the process.
Students who attended the event were asked three questions:
Do you know what ASPSU is and what it does?
Will you be voting in the student elections?
What comments do you have about general elections?
Name: Erin Corbin
Major: Psychology
“They help out with different problems and issues at Portland State.”
“I usually don’t because it’s not on my priority list.”
“I think it’s interesting who’s running.”
Name: Meghan Field
Major: Geography
“I know that they enter my classes once a year and ask us to register to vote. I haven’t seen them in my classes this year so I’m glad they have a table out in the Park Blocks so I can register to vote.”
“No, because I graduate in June.”
“I think it’s really important to be educated about who you vote for. Don’t just vote because popular media give this image about who’s right and who’s wrong. See what feels right with you. It really frustrates me how ignorant people can be toward this national election. As I get older, I notice how influenced the younger generations are by others.”
Name: Steven Ponec
Major: Art Practices
“A little bit. I know they represent the students at PSU and just by interacting with them I know they do the voter registration. That’s kind of about it.”
“Maybe. It depends how much information I know and if it will make a difference.”
“There’s so many things I can say. I’m sure people have said this already, but Trump is a horrible, racist, xenophobic person. Go Bernie.”
Name: Cesar Maldonado
Major: Liberal Studies
“No.”
“No.”
“I don’t think it matters more who wins the presidential elections, as long as we elect dependable congresswomen and men.”
Name: Alex Clemens
Major: Philosophy and Psychology
“No.”
“No, I don’t know anything about any of the candidates.”
“I don’t understand why someone so belligerent and ridiculous and stupid as Donald Trump has any supporters.”
The following message is brought to you by Puppets for the Establishment Parasites (PEP), who want to encourage you to let them finish off America so they can move on to their next host…
“You let us get this far…throw the red pill in the trash; stop trying to struggle against the hypnosis now and let us take the last few drops of blood…it will all be over soon”
“And please remember that free trade helps America; illegal immigration helps America; policing the world is America’s moral obligation; super PACs are free speech to help poor unwitting candidates; there are no paid protesters; the news media we fund is unbiased; lobbyists are good; politicians and bureaucrats cannot be bought; your election process is not rigged; candidates should never be able to run as individuals without going through a political party; those idiotic concerns about the debt and bubbles are unfounded; our education system is the best; your privacy is always protected; the war in Iraq was necessary; Russia is evil; your government listens to you…anyone who disagrees with this reality is a xenophobic, isolationist, ignorant, misogynistic, racist, terroristic, nutjob!”
It doesn’t take a genius to understand that a global free-trade market means that workers making $25/hr will have to compete with workers making $1/hr. An equilibrium must ultimately be achieved just like in any system and, in this case, that essentially means that American workers will be working for no more than the minimum wage set by law when all is said and done. Unfortunately, countries without minimum wage laws will still offer lower labor costs than us, which means that those minimum wage jobs won’t even be available here in the US when the dust finally settles from this. Anyone who says anything else concerning free-trade is either lying through their teeth, or is a completely clueless idiot. “Free-trade” comes at a huge cost to workers in developed countries.
90% of the cocaine here comes through our southern border; 80% of the meth and heroin here comes through our southern border! If you think Trump, who continually says “I love Mexican people,” is a xenophobe because he wants to secure our southern border, you are a gullible fool subject to exploiter-funded media influence. Trump’s negative comments were targeted at a subset of illegal immigrants; NOT Mexicans! Illegal immigration is destroying our society (illegal immigrant children are almost always below grade level so teachers have to spend most of their time teaching at that level which hurts our children; illegal immigration keeps wages low; and the drugs from south of our border are ruining our children’s lives).
