The Vanguard supports Ethan Allen Smith for ASPSU president
The Vanguard is proud to endorse Ethan Allen Smith’s candidacy for ASPSU president. Ethan Allen Smith is running alongside vice presidential candidate Jeffrey Frankenhauser.
Both Frankenhauser and Smith are juniors in PSU’s graphic design program. Their “Occupy ASPSU” platform is focused on student government reform, reductions in student government spending and upholding the current ASPSU constitution.
The Vanguard editorial staff believes strongly in Ethan Allen Smith’s commitment to student governance that is focused on the needs of students.
The Tuesday, May 8 edition of the Vanguard will feature a complete candidate profile.
Occupy ASPSU is a weird platform, reform ASPSU, ok now what are you going to do about Tuition Increases? Whats your stance on University Pointe? What kind of ADVOCACY is Mr. Smith promising?, it sounds like hes promising alot of not spending, and not changing the current model, this tells us nothin about how he will talk with or what he’ll prioritize talking about with Wiewel or anyone else as the student body representative of portland state university
This has got to be a joke right? All Smith brings to ASPSU is white privilege. Also, he has no other goals besides “defunding paid positions in ASPSU.” Sometimes I’d like people like him to win just so that they fail miserably as the pressures of the position slap them in the face…
Reform student government so that only students of privilege who don’t need jobs to go to school can participate? That doesn’t represent me.
It’s like the nail in the “Vanguard is a worthless yellow journalism outfit” coffin. Thank you, Vanguard, for removing any doubt I may have once had.
“Listen here, you little girl. Stop acting like a child” – Ethan Allen Smith to Senator Albright when serving as Vice-president last year.
Belittling a student senator based on her gender and age? The Vanguard would endorse this candidate. I personally don’t want sexism and ageism leading our student government, I hope you don’t either.
For Christ sake, the paper didn’t even interview any of the other candidates; I think we should Occupy the Vanguard. Get it together Mr. Editor.
Ignoring the fact that I never actually said that (which President Rahmlow well knows), I am not surprised that our current ASPSU president would jump in to this kind of mudslinging.
ASPSU is broken and it is these kinds of interpersonal attacks that are the reason that the student body is apathetic toward our student government.
I am appalled at this outright lie. New low, Adam. New low.
First: Her last name was Ulbright, not Albright. Obviously we should believe your account because you’ve proven to have such affinity for detail.
Two: You are a liar.
This is just as immature as it would be for someone to ask you to describe what the inside of prison looks like.
“The paper didn’t even interview any of the other candidates…”
Really? How about this article http://psuvanguard.com/news/2012-13-aspsu-presidential-and-vice-presidential-candidates/from last week that interviewed every candidate?

Voldermort for Smith!
Ethan Allen Smith? Are you fucking serious?
I am a senator in ASPSU and I ran on Mr. Smith’s slate last year because I believed he was the best candidate for the job in 2011. Now my respect for him has fallen consistently ever since the vote. He went to the e-board and threw a tantrum that I initially throught was justified until I read up and agreed with the e-board’s ruling to not throw Adam out of the race even though I personally wanted it. He is as best as I can tell running on a grudge. He has dogged the president all year when, to my surprise, he has kicked ass consistently and without fail. It is also of note that Mr. Hunt the editor of this fine and dandy publication has a series of personal grudges with Mr. Rahmlow.
You are endorsing a candidate of no substance that has no intent of making ASPSU do better work for students or helping us make a better school. All you’re running on is making sure that people with the money to be in government are the ones doing it. Check the minutes, I opposed that pay raise vigourously and vocally, but I’ve changed my mind since. I had to hold a job to pay my bills and because of the work that that and ASPSU required I had to pick and left the job. The only reason I COULD be in ASPSU was the pay. Which, mind you, is so far below minimum wage it isn’t even funny. The work that I do is exhausting, stressful and a labor of love. Why not defund the Vangaurd while your at it Ethan? They are hard working students too! Or tackle something that is a seriously problem in the fee like Athletics?
My fellow students, don’t vote for Mr. Smith when all he has to offer you is an angry, disappointed rerun from yesteryear.
So in all fairness then, what have you done that’s tangibly benefitted me during your time in ASPSU? I’m not being a smart-ass here; with such an impassioned defense on your part of the service awards, we deserve to know what kind of return on investment ASPSU is exactly. Cause right now most students don’t find it a worthy one. In my opinion, revising bylaws and whining in the park blocks are not worthy of student money, no matter how many hours are wasted in doing so.
It’s not about how much time or effort you put in; I’d pay twice as much for a student government that spent half the time working that ASPSU does, if it got me tangible results.
Does helping to pass the Textbook Affordability Act count as benefitting you? How about doing our best to fight agaist tuition increases, even though that resulted in a comprimise of a 7 percent hike over the proposed 11 percent? Or how about registering voters to keep elected officals in office who actuall care about education?
Still not enough? We do host multiple events focused on getting students involved in both school and local politics, conduct class raps to get word out there on things happening, and phone bank to get the opinion of students out to our government reps.
This doesn’t mean that there aren’t problems in student government, we all will admit that there are. But we are working on changing those to, with the recent VARC resolution that the Senate passed this past week and that will be on the ballot for the student to (hoepfully) vote in. We are working for change, the question is why aren’t you helping us?
There is a difference between making something cheaper and keeping it the same price so it doesn’t go up. We worked hard for the latter so it doesn’t cost more than it already does for school
Smith once again fails to answer the question of what he will work on while in office, besides making ASPSU consist of privileged students. Why should I as a student of color who will not be able to be a part of ASPSU if positions will be unpaid due to financial hardship, vote for you Mr. Smith? I seriously think there is a disconnect between your platform and the general student body, which consists of mostly transfer students and commuters, and also is the most diverse university in the entire state. PSU is NOT like Harvard or Stanford, or the Univeristy of Portland either, where the population is mostly homogenous and could afford to be involved without getting paid.
Wow. I had defended the Vanguard to friends and associates of mine who called it a fish wrapper. I guess I was wrong. Why didn’t the Vanguard conduct a single candidate interview with any of the real candidates running?
The Vanguard is extremely hypocritical. Earlier in the year, this rag complained about having their pay cut or altered, and made a huge stink about the SFC and the budget allocation process. Now the Vanguard endorses the candidate who isn’t even campaigning, but who wants to make ASPSU voluntary, thus ensuring that you get a bunch of upper middle class white men running the show. Bravo Vanguard. Maybe the Vanguard should be strictly voluntary.
Again, they interviewed all of the candidates here: http://psuvanguard.com/news/2012-13-aspsu-presidential-and-vice-presidential-candidates/
I don’t know why everyone on here is claiming that didn’t happen without actually looking through the papers from the past week.
I really have to echo the statements made earlier. Mr. Smith’s one and only issue on his platform stinks of maybe not so subtle racism. Defunding all paid positions at ASPSU would ensure that the only people who could afford to be apart of student government are people of privilege. If you haven’t noticed, people of privilege are mostly white. This would prevent anything even coming close to representation of the student body. Way to exclude marginalized communities Mr. Smith. Why should I as a person of color vote for you when it’s obvious your agenda would prevent my fellow peers from participating in your idea of democratic representation?
What has ASPSU done? I don’t even pay that much attention, but I know that ASPSU helped get the Textbook Affordability Act passed. They registered a ton of voters. They fought against the university administration’s desire to raise tuition. To name a few.
I’m surprised the Tiffany and Marlon campaign isn’t paying you yet, you sure rehash their talking points well. By the way, the textbook affordability act is non-binding “feel good” legislation anyways. I guarantee my textbooks will still be more expensive next year. Student gov should focus more efforts on campus where it can actually be a major influence in improving things.
And Victor didn’t get fooled by non-binding legislation like Tiffany did.
Student gov should focus more efforts on campus where it can actually be a major influence in improving things.
Do you have any suggestions?
We are trying to start with student involvement. Right now only 1000 out of the 30,000 students as PSU vote. Presents a bit of a problem when trying to get a widespread motivation for change.
Something ASPSU did just last week:
Held a town hall with Congresswoman Bonamici this past week to keep the Stafford Loan interests down. If there is no intervention, it will DOUBLE by next year.
