Don’t ask, don’t tell

The “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy has been around since 1993. This policy allows gays and lesbians to serve in the armed forces as long as they abstain from homosexual activity and do not disclose their sexual orientation. Is this really fair?

Some children left behind

Standardized tests, program cuts and frustration are all part of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. President Bush implemented this program in 2001 to increase the performance of students in primary and secondary schools. While it may have increased students’ proficiency in math and English, many are suffering feelings of inadequacy and disappointment.

Infringement of rights or not?

Whether or not to mandate the human papilloma virus vaccine has become a highly controversial topic over the past few weeks. Parents, politicians and doctors all over the country have been questioning if this vaccine would be a good thing or a bad thing. Abstinence is the best way to prevent an unwanted pregnancy or an STD. However, the abstinence-only health classes that are being taught in our public schools are not competently teaching about contraceptives. Instead of teaching teenagers about effective birth control methods, students are taught to “just say no,” which puts them at a higher risk for diseases.

Whether or not to spank your children should be a parent’s choice, not the government’s. However, the government begs to differ. Until recently, spanking was a tried and true method of discipline. Unfortunately for spankers in California, it may soon be illegal.
