It is 8:30 a.m. on a sunny Monday. PSU President Wim Wiewel, shortly after arriving at his office, has just been stuck with a needle and bandaged up. “Where’s my cookie and juice?” Wiewel jokes, flashing his characteristic open grin. While it may seem like an unpleasant way to start the week for most, the atmosphere in the president’s office was all smiles.

While it may seem like an unpleasant way to start the week for most, the atmosphere in the president’s office was all smiles.
Wiewel, along with his wife, Alice, and Vice Provost of Student Affairs Jackie Balzer, were receiving their influenza vaccine shots to prepare for this year’s flu season.
The Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is working to help lessen the impact of the flu virus around PSU campus, by offering drop-in flu clinics for $15 in the final days of October.
“I’m quite healthy myself,” Balzer said. “I worry that I’ll give it to some little kid.”
The flu virus kills some 36,000 people each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and approximately 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications.
No appointments are needed, and the $15 fee can be billed directly to your student account.
