Viking Men score big road win
The Viking men’s basketball team cruised to a 76-65 win Saturday night over Northern Arizona (5-19, 1-11), thanks to five Vikings, led by Charles Odum, scoring in double figures.
“It was a good win for us tonight,” head coach Tyler Geving said. “It’s great to get a win on the road, especially since it’s been difficult for us to do this year.”
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Vikings, who are now a game away from a .500 record in conference and overall games.
Portland State turned what was once a tie-game into a 15-point lead during a five-minute surge late in the first half. Harthun sparked a 17-2 run with six straight points, giving the Vikings a 41-26 halftime lead.
Portland State’s lead reached 17 points before the Lumberjacks made a run to close the gap to eight points on two occasions late in the game.
“We battled and we did some good things, but we just have mental lapses,” Lumberjacks head coach Dave Brown said.
The Vikings currently sit in fifth place in the Big Sky conference after Saturday’s win. They have five conference games remaining, sandwiched around an ESPN Bracket Buster game against Idaho scheduled for Feb. 18. Three of the remaining five conference games are at home.
The Vikings will return home to practice for a few days before heading out to finish their three-game road swing in Pocatello, Idaho, where they play Idaho State Thursday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
