Vikings enter the Big Sky with a draw

Portland State’s women’s soccer will travel to Northern Arizona to face the Lumberjacks this coming Sunday. The game will mark their second Big Sky Conference game after Saturday’s tough 0-0 double-overtime draw at PGE Park against the Sacramento State Hornets.

The Vikings won last year’s meeting against Northern Arizona 5-1. Midfielder Katie Miyake scored three of the five goals in that dominating win against the Lumberjacks. Overall, the Vikings took 18 shots on goal compared to Northern Arizona’s eight. Sunday’s game could be Portland State’s chance to open up the Big Sky for domination.

The game against Sacramento was lesson in frustration for the Viks. The team was unable to score during the long match, despite taking five shots on goal. Three of the attempted shots came from Viking midfielder Sophia Mundy. The Hornet’s saving grace came in the form of goalie Stephanie Shaw, who chalked up a shutout with a five saves on goal.

Viking head coach Tara Erickson felt disappointed with the Vikings’ play. “We should have been able to put this match away on our home field, but we made too many poor decisions.”
