Wilson and Davidson look to NCAA Championships

Portland State wrestling will be sending senior Jeremy Wilson and junior Randy Davidson to the NCAA Championship in Albany, N.Y.

Wilson, at the Pac-10 Championship, was the number one seed at 184 pounds and had the best record on the team, now at 34-6. Unfortunately, Wilson was upset in his championship match, 4-3; in part to a stalling penalty called against him in overtime. Wilson’s loss came from Oregon State’s Issac Weber, who Wilson had already defeated early in the season.

“Jeremy just has to get back on track mentally,” head coach Marlin Grahn said.

At 197 pounds was the unseeded Davidson. The junior went into the Pac-10 Championships with the third best record for the Vikings and came out as an NCAA qualifier. Davidson lost his first match to the OSU wrestler at the No.2 seed. The loss put the junior into the consolation bracket and he came back from there to bring about a rematch with the OSU grappler, Jason Lovell. Davidson had lost twice to Lovell, once early in the season and in the first round of the championships. In the consolation championship Lovell edged Davidson for a third time 5-2. Although he was unhappy about not getting past the Oregon State wrestler, Davidson will be making his first trip to the NCAAs and can make up for the loss there.

“I’m ready to go,” Davidson said. “I just need to learn some new moves and get things together.”

Wilson and Davidson will be heading to the NCAA Championships in two weeks. Wilson will look to add on to his all-time win list, which is at 107, second in the PSU record books to Dan Russell (133).
