Sailing caps off year at the Gorge

Portland State offers a variety of club sports for students, alumni and faculty to participate in. Spring, with its occasionally beautiful weather and promise that the end of school is in sight (at least for the time being), is always a popular time for people to get involved in a program – as a participant or even just a spectator. Sailing has proved to be an especially popular choice for both pursuits.

The sailing team, coached by PSU graduate Kerry Poe, raced its last regatta of the year this past weekend at the Cascade Locks in the Columbia River Gorge. While there, several PSU sailors were recognized by the Northwest Awards Committee with honors for their mastery of, and dedication to, the sport.

Freshman Jeff Causey, who served as team captain and skipper for the varsity team, was named All-Northwest Sailor of the Year. In his crew, sophomore Anika Olsen was named All-Northwest Crew of the Year. Causey and Olsen won a number of regattas this past year and routinely finished among the top three spots.

In his last regatta at PSU, senior Keith Brkich was presented with an award for Most Improved, a nod to his three years with the team and the great progress he demonstrated in the sport during that time.

If you would like to get involved in sailing, but have never been out on a boat in your life, PSU offers introductory classes that will, according to the PSU sailing Web site, “give beginning sailors the knowledge and skills required for small boat sailing and prepare them for sailing as part of our club or racing team.” The final classes of this school year were given May 3-4, but it is likely that another round will be offered this summer.
