In case you were wondering…
Like UCLA and USC, Portland State has a film studies major. But unlike those established programs, PSU has yet to crank any super famous alums through its grinder. That’s probably because it’s still so fresh.
After years of lobbying from many different people, the PSU faculty senate approved the film major last May. The department, housed under the School of Fine and Performing Arts, gives wannabe filmmakers and theorists a chance to bone up on their knowledge of such classics as North by Northwest, Bonnie and Clyde and, uh, North by Northwest.
The best part about taking a PSU film course? It could be the lively lectures, it could be the knowledge gained, but more likely it’s the opportunity to sit in the dark for a few hours at a time and catch up on your much-needed sleep, while Bicycle Thieves or Wild Strawberries flickers in front of you for the umpteenth time.
What the hell is that?
Ever been late for your 2 p.m. class and heard the droning chimes of those church-like bells signaling your tardiness? If so, you’ve probably wondered just where the hell the sound of those bells is coming from. You can’t see them, but there’s got to be some bells around somewhere… right? Wrong. Ambling all over campus trying to find the source of the ringing isn’t going to yield the sudden discovery of a mysterious PSU-logo-branded bell tower.
Instead, save yourself some time and do this: From the South Park Blocks, look up to the very top of Smith Memorial Student Union. See that little speaker? That’s PSU’s “bell tower.” No joke. Staff in Facilities and Planning speculate that years ago, PSU wanted its own version of a bell tower. Apparently, the university thought they could accomplish this by recording the sound of bells and playing it over a loudspeaker every hour. Or maybe someone just wanted to find a way to re-enact the climactic bell tower scene in Vertigo. Only, you know, modern. It doesn’t really take the place of an ancient gothic bell tower (obviously), but at least it still keeps accurate time.
