The top three finalists vying to become the next president of Portland State University were announced today after nine months of meetings and interviews by the Presidential Search Committee.

The candidates will visit the campus individually throughout the first two weeks of April to meet and greet students, faculty and others from the community. The finalists are looking to permanently fill the hole left by former PSU President Daniel Bernstine’s departure last June when he left to become CEO and president for the Law School Admission Council in Pennsylvania. Michael Reardon, former PSU provost, has held the interim president position since that time.

The final candidates are: Dr. Wim Wiewel, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University of Baltimore, Dr. Kathie L. Olsen, deputy director and Chief Operation Officer for the National Science Foundation, and Dr. Jon Whitmore, president of Texas Tech University.

Many candidates were interviewed since the 15-member search committee was formed last July and committee member and ASPSU president Rudy Soto said they represent the best among the applicants they considered.

“Students, staff, faculty and the community will be the ones to really help weigh in,” Soto said. “And it will be through their outreach and the meet and greets that will happen on campus, where people will be able to inform us the committee and the board [State Board of Higher Education] as to who really connects with those of us on campus.”

After the candidates finish their visits to PSU next month they will be interviewed by the State Board of Higher Education and the final hiring decision should be made by early May.
