Tapscott played his last game as a Viking, and he will be missed. The senior averaged nine rebounds a game and had a huge effect on the team this season. One of the more memorable moments from his career this year was a game winner against Seattle University: Tapscott hit multiple shots in the final minute, including one at the buzzer to give the Vikings the victory.
Hard work leads to success
Thirty-eight points, but most importantly the win: That’s how Charles Odum walked off the court in a game against Sacramento State this season. Odum connected on five three-pointers and shot 11 for 16 from the field as he led Portland State to a 94-88 victory.
Nationals or bust
Vikings know how to throw. Senior Sean MacKelvie broke the Portland State record in the men’s javelin last week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Regionals and will move on to nationals.
Early bird gets the worm
Practice starts at 5:45 in the morning almost every day of the week. That means waking up at 5 a.m. and getting ready to go out on the water. A lot of days, practice lasts two hours, a long time to spend soaked while most people are still sleeping. This is the average morning for the Portland State University Crew, the rowing team.
Austin bound
The Big Sky Outdoor Championships are over, but track and field season continues. Portland State had some very successful athletes this season, and some of them will be moving on to the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas.
Starfucker
How can you not like a band with that name?
Straight out of Portland, Starfucker is a band with more than a great name. Of course, having profanity in your band’s name has its downsides. Starfucker has struggled to get its music out through radio play and concerts. The quality of their music shines through, however.
Vikings’ basketball starters replaced
With the basketball season long over, the Portland State Vikings are well into their off-season training, which includes lifting, individual workouts and open gyms. In addition, head coach Tyler Geving added four more players to his roster in hopes to replace three starters from last season.
Outdoor championships cap off record-breaking season
Portland State broke numerous conference and school records last weekend at the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The women’s 4×100 relay team broke the conference championship record en route to winning their event. Senior Dominique Maloney broke the Portland State record in the women’s 400-meter. And to top it off, senior Sean Mackelvie was the Big Sky Champion in the men’s javelin.
Injuries aside, lacrosse club has bright future
After a season filled with injuries, the Portland State lacrosse team is looking forward to next year. The team will be hiring new coaches, bringing back formerly injured players and building on their freshmen and young athletes.
Javelin gives team a jump
He started throwing little plastic javelins in fourth grade. Now, senior Sean Mackelvie leads the Big Sky Conference in the men’s javelin with a distance of 218-02 (66.49m). Mackelvie has the chance to take home the gold medal for the Vikings in the Big Sky Championships.
Back to the big time
With the Big Sky Championships around the corner, Portland State’s track and field squad is looking for big performances out of their freshmen and for the young athletes to repeat a third place finish from the indoor season.
