Crime and punishment
In the wake of several highly publicized assaults, the spotlight has been focused on TriMet and to the questions of crime, safety and security on Portland’s public transit system. Footage from a late-December assault of a 14-year-old girl made the rounds on YouTube and in local schools, and local media has highlighted assaults on passengers and TriMet operators.
Smart Park employees assaulted off-campus
On Monday Jan. 30, in an off-campus, non-university Smart Park facility located on Southwest 3rd and Alder, two men attempting to steal or “prowl” an automobile assaulted two employees on patrol in the facility.
ASPSU to host rally to protest cuts in higher education funding
On Wednesday, Feb. 21, the Associated Students of PSU will hold a rally to protest the continued state budget cuts to higher education funding. The Public Education for Portland rally will bring together administration and students from Portland State and other Portland-based community colleges.

University announces new budget model
On Jan. 19, Portland State unveiled the new university-wide budget model that will affect the 2012–13 academic year and will be fully implemented in the 2013–14 academic year. According to a press release issued by PSU, the change will “help the campus meet its academic and financial goals despite declining state funding.”
PSU’s Planning Club to host mayoral candidate forum
On Friday, Feb. 6, Portland State will host a public forum on Active Transportation featuring mayoral candidates Eileen Brady, Charlie Hales and Jefferson Smith. The forum will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Lincoln Hall’s main auditorium. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and light refreshments will be provided.
Students displaced after water pipe sprouts leaks
On Jan. 19, more than 20 students in Portland State’s Blumel Residence Hall awoke to find their rooms damaged by water after a pipe in the building’s waterline sprouted several leaks.
Recent sexual assaults may be connected
Recently the Vanguard published a report on the sexual assaults that occurred on the PSU campus in mid to late December [“Sexual assaults lead to increased security,” Jan. 10]. After the story was published, a student, who will remain anonymous, contacted the Vanguard. She had also been assaulted by a man whom she believes was the same assailant as the one involved in the incident on Dec. 7, 2011. When she later attempted to file a CPSO report she was turned away, so her assault was not immediately connected to the Dec. 7 incident.
