A few weeks ago I wrote about abstinence-only education, and mentioned that many websites teens and adults use to glean information about safe sex practices actually disseminate factually incorrect material. I said I would write more later. Now I am.
Sex ed and the Internet: part I
The following the first of a two-part series about comprehensive sex education, hook-up culture, benevolent sexism and some of the corners of the Internet where these intersect.
Feminism: conservatives’ dirtiest word
Most of us have heard about Romney’s “binders full of women” and seen the data proving Romney didn’t actually compile said binders and, furthermore, that his record of hiring women was actually quite poor.
Romney’s promiscuous behavior
My dictionary defines promiscuous as “consisting of a number of dissimilar parts or elements mingled in a confused or indiscriminate manner.”
This definition fits Mitt Romney’s inconsistencies perfectly. In a weird way, all his pandering to voters reminds me of a private school boy looking to score by any means available.
Choice and the election
Susan B. Anthony once said, “No self-respecting woman should work or wish for the success of a party that ignores her sex.” I keep thinking about this as we approach Nov. 6.
HPV vaccination
Cervical cancer is often linked to genital human papillomavirus, the most common sexually transmitted infection. HPV has also been linked to other types of cancer in both men and women.
Parental rights for rapists?
Recently the Republican Party approved a platform calling for a ban on abortions with no exceptions for rape or incest.
Condom sense
Several years ago the rapper will.i.am was asked what single item a woman he was interested in could possess that would convince him they were incompatible. His response? “If she had condoms in her house, that would just fuckin’ throw me off. That’s just tacky.” This still infuriates me.
Insurance and sex
I was very little the first time I became aware of the inequitable state of health care in the U.S.
During a trip to the emergency room, we discovered that I had a coded insurance card that distinguished me as a staff relative because my father was a doctor in that hospital. This simply isn’t a fair way to assess injury and decide who needs the most care.
