Mitt Romney has faced several hurdles during his presidential race. He has been pressed to release his personal tax information by multiple media sources, he has completely changed his position on women’s choice issues and he recently managed to screw up a visit to London.
Sustainability: more than ‘going green’
Last week I finally broke down and paid my summer term tuition. When I checked the billing statement in my email, I noticed that it had been graciously signed: “Thank you for supporting sustainability at PSU.” I tried to ignore it, but it made me think. Portland State has a long way to go before it can honestly claim to be sustainable.
Security in the flesh
When the slogan “Keep Portland Weird” comes up, airport security protests are probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Still, weird is weird, especially a recent incident in which a man was arrested at Portland International Airport after he stripped naked in front of an airport security guard.
Counting the cost of health care
In a study of 11 industrialized countries, it was discovered that American women are most likely to skip visiting a doctor because of the cost. The survey, conducted by the Commonwealth Fund, revealed that in 2010, 43 percent of American women between the ages of 19 and 64 did not see a doctor or take medication for financial reasons—compared to 7 percent of women in Great Britain and 8 percent in the Netherlands.
Cha-ching!
An Oregon woman is suing Justin Bieber for $9.2 million in damages, claiming permanent hearing loss after she attended his 2010 concert here in Portland.
Healthy kids, heavy burden
Whether you were pleased with or dismayed by President Obama’s health care plan, it was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court last month, making it federal law. While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is an entirely different can of worms, the health care debate does bring up something that many Oregonians should care about: the Healthy Kids Act of 2009.
Funny “ha ha” or funny “oh no”?
Comedian Daniel Tosh recently became the target of a media firefight after a performance at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles. While the exact details are unclear, the primary claim is that Tosh crossed a line while performing his set by making light of rape and rape jokes.
Democrats and Republicans, listen up!
July 18 marked the 94th birthday of former South African president Nelson Mandela. It was also Nelson Mandela International Day, honoring the civil rights leader who garnered worldwide acclaim for his invaluable contributions to human rights.
Condi on deck
Eeny, meeny, miney, mo, who will Mitt Romney choose to stand by him during this presidential election? If the rumor mill’s right, it just might be Condoleezza Rice.
Fostering success
Almost 3,000 children have been in the Multnomah County foster care system at least once in the past year, according to the Children First for Oregon’s 2011 Progress Report: Status Of Oregon’s Children. That’s roughly 65 percent of all foster kids in the entire state of Oregon.
Google–
Every once in a while, I’ll click the Google+ bookmark I still have saved in my web browser (because bookmarking Google+ was the only way I could remind myself to use it). It’s a barren sight. There are a few new posts from the handful of tech bloggers I have circled and a few comics from The Oatmeal, but that’s about it. None of my actual friends have posted anything and no one new that I know has joined. Google+? No—more like Google minus.
