Portland State Professor of Japanese Laurence “Larry” Kominz’s latest project—the first English-language translation of Yukio Mushima’s play The Black Lizard, currently showing at Southeast Portland’s Imago Theatre—is receiving rave reviews.
Early bird gets the worm
Practice starts at 5:45 in the morning almost every day of the week. That means waking up at 5 a.m. and getting ready to go out on the water. A lot of days, practice lasts two hours, a long time to spend soaked while most people are still sleeping. This is the average morning for the Portland State University Crew, the rowing team.
Season of sun
With the summer fast approaching and the weather gods smiling down on the city, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the sun in Portland. Some of the most popular excursions include running, biking and going on long hikes.
Reach the Beach success
The 22nd annual Reach the Beach ride, put on by the American Lung Association, was yet another success, as more than 2,700 riders came out. While the final donation amount hasn’t yet been tallied as of press time, around $500,000 has already been counted. The annual ride features four starting points in Oregon: Amity, Grande Ronde, Newberg and Portland. The Portland route is the longest at just over 100 miles with the other three ranging from 28 to 80 miles.
Portland Trail Blazers once again playing the lottery
The most exciting moment in recent Portland Trail Blazers history came on May 22, 2007, when the team seemingly received a life preserver in the form of the number one overall pick. Ironically, thanks in part to that stroke of luck, the Blazers find themselves hoping for a magic ping-pong ball again five years later.
Between The Horns: Give us baseball
The disparity of baseball hats in Portland kind of blew my mind when I first arrived in the Rose City earlier this year. You see, as a native of Northern California, I grew up to understand that wearing an A’s cap in San Francisco is a clear indication that you want to be called “moneyfail” (a scathing witticism created in response to Oakland’s diminished power and the best-selling novel Moneyball), and wearing a Giants cap in Oakland is, well, not the smartest thing in the world if you value your well-being.
Parenting in college
Becoming a father changes you in numerous ways and can even prompt you to recreate your identity in fashions unseen by the previous incarnation of your formerly childless self. For instance, one way I never imagined I would spend my time was reading advice in parenting articles and magazines.
Tiffany Dollar and Marlon Holmes elected to ASPSU presidency
Tiffany Dollar and Marlon Holmes are the newly elected president and vice president of ASPSU. The election results of the 2012–13 Associated Students of Portland State University election were released after the resolution of the eligibility of candidate Diamond Zerework. Zerework was initially disqualified from the candidacy on Monday but was reinstated Tuesday.
China’s Communist Revolution remembered
Mao Zedong remains one of the most controversial figures of the 20th century.
While his leadership unified China under Communist rule with the defeat of the Nationalist armies of Chiang Kai-shek in 1949, Mao is also remembered in the West as a man whose harsh rule killed millions upon millions of people.
Austin bound
The Big Sky Outdoor Championships are over, but track and field season continues. Portland State had some very successful athletes this season, and some of them will be moving on to the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas.
Ride with us
