Getting into the ‘Portland State of Mind’

Whether you’ve seen signs around the city or heard through word of mouth, it’s hard to miss the buzz that Portland State of Mind is currently creating.

Spanning Oct. 18-27, PSOM is a collection of over 50 events taking place in downtown Portland and the primary purpose is to promote the university.

“The beauty of [PSOM] is that these events are all over the map, from campus and alumni to the community,” Chris Broderick, PSU Associate Vice President for Communications, said.

This year in particular includes events specifically targeted at students.

Kicking off the week was a downtown scavenger hunt where students could win prizes including gift certificates, PSOM gear, and VIP tickets to the Simon Benson Awards.

The Simon Benson Awards Dinner, a community event, will be held in the evening at the Oregon Convention Center on Tuesday Oct. 22 and will include a keynote speech delivered by CNN journalist Anderson Cooper.

Some other noteworthy events taking place this Saturday include the Portland Farmers Market in the South Park Blocks and two different PSU alumni events in the evening—Piano RAMA in the Lincoln Recital Hall room 75, and the Alumni Beer Launch Party at Rogue Hall.

One of the new events for this year’s PSOM is a discussion called From Debt to Degree. Held in the Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, students, parents and community members can weigh in on the issue of student debt.

On Thursday Oct. 24, the Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize Exhibit & Reception in Neuberger Hall will hold an awards ceremony for the students of the School of Art and Design while displaying their work.

The Vikings will kick off at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 26 for the homecoming football game versus North Dakota (free with PSU I.D.). Anyone is welcome to attend the Viking Tailgate Party prior to the game, which starts at 11 a.m.

To end the night with a bang, OK Go and the March Fourth Marching Band will perform live in concert at the Peter Stott Center. The event is being put on by PSU students and is open to the public. Tickets are $10 for students, $12 for alumni and $18 for the public.

Rounding off PSOM will be the Day of Service, an event focused on giving back to the community where students can partake in several service projects. It begins at 8:30 a.m. and requires a sign-up in advance.
