Letters

I transferred to this university two years ago and although I think this is a great place to study, during my first year here I found a newspaper on campus that frustrated me and is called the Vanguard. I have picked this newspaper up numerous times over the past couple of years. Whether I was waiting for time to pass so I could go into a classroom or just to read to see what my university was concerned about or, on a more general basis, what the students were talking about.

A concerned reader

I transferred to this university two years ago and although I think this is a great place to study, during my first year here I found a newspaper on campus that frustrated me and is called the Vanguard. I have picked this newspaper up numerous times over the past couple of years. Whether I was waiting for time to pass so I could go into a classroom or just to read to see what my university was concerned about or, on a more general basis, what the students were talking about.

The problem that I find with this newspaper is that it has no representation of who we are on campus. It mainly has articles that are negative to our society and our school. I would be embarrassed to have others in our community read this newspaper. It isn’t even enjoyable to read to a number of people who go to this university. It would be nice to pick up a newspaper on campus and not have to read somebody’s rudely spoken opinion, full of profanities and disrespect to our society in it. I have read a couple of articles in this newspaper that were good and respectful, but for the most part it is not.

I think that everything on campus should reflect who our school is and what it stands for. It needs to be a paper that reports the truth and has a few good editorial exclusives in it. To make a valid point you shouldn’t have to use profanity or harsh words. This newspaper is part of our university, and if students aren’t happy with it, then why do we keep it this way?

I am writing you this letter out of concern; not to be another complaining student, but rather to be a voice who is speaking out about this newspaper. It would be great to see one day this become something that represents who we are as students, people who are intelligent, creative and like to have fun, and not as rude inconsiderate people in the community.

I want a president with plans

All across the country, people are saying that college students are all voting for Barack Obama. I, for one, am tired of being told that because of my age, I am supposed to support one candidate over another. Worse than that, many college students are doing just that. I want to know that when I graduate college, I have a job, I have the ability to buy a house that is not going to be worth nothing the minute I buy it, and I want to know that my kids are going to have a world to grow up in.

While Barack Obama has given wonderful speeches about his change, he has done almost nothing to show how that would happen. While he has voted for the Cheney energy bill, he has said the environment is important to him. He has also said that he supports drilling in Alaska. While many people in college have not had to deal with the job market or housing issues, Hillary Clinton has laid out step-by-step plans on how she is going to fix these current problems. I want to know that when I come home from college, my parents still have a home for me to come to. Nothing is more important to me than the hills and mountains of Oregon and I want a president that is going to stand up for those things that are so important to me: Hillary Clinton.

Fudging the numbers

Go Michael! Good on the Vanguard for doing a story on the new campus “radicals”: conservatives.Shame on the Iraq Body Count Exhibition people for jacking the name of the real Iraq Body Count group (which had never heard of the people doing the exhibition) and for lying about the numbers of civilians killed in the Iraq war.

Has the Vanguard chased down this story yet?
