PSU writers win top honors

The Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) presented its 2001 Collegiate Newspaper Contest Awards in Eugene on Friday and the Vanguard brought home several awards, including sweeping the category for best writer.

Sportswriter Erik Lyslo took first place for best writer in Division 1, which includes daily papers produced at four year colleges. PopArts writer Aaron Miles and news writer John Yoakum tied for second place.

Another individual award for Portland State went to Kristin Barnhart, who took second place for best sports photo in Division 1. Barry Deutsch took second place for best cartooning.

Portland State picked up a first for best house ad, which is an advertisement designed to promote the paper.

The paper also took second for best special section for the survival guide issue that went out the week before school started in the fall.

Finally, Portland State won an honorable mention for best section for the PopArts segment that runs every Friday.

Oregon State University’s paper, the Barometer, was the big winner at the banquet. They won first place for general excellence as well as the majority of the Division 1 awards.
