In their first game at the Stott Center since Nov. 25, the Vikings (13-3, 3-0 BSC) were able to overcome a slow start and grind out a 64-49 victory over the visiting Weber State Wildcats (6-8, 0-2 BSC).

In their first game at the Stott Center since Nov. 25, the Vikings (13-3, 3-0 BSC) were able to overcome a slow start and grind out a 64-49 victory over the visiting Weber State Wildcats (6-8, 0-2 BSC).

Neither team was able to exert their offensive attack during the game, as the Vikings were held in check for much of the contest by the Big Sky Conference’s premier defensive team.

In a lackluster shooting performance, Portland State shot just 36 percent from the field for the game. Meanwhile, the Vikings’ suffocating defense held Weber State to a meager 28 percent from the field. Freshman post Courtney Cremer led the way on defense with four blocks and six points, while junior forward Kelsey Kahle’s aggressive play produced four steals.

“We just did a great job defensively tonight, and we really needed it tonight because our shot was off,” said head coach Sherri Murrell.

Held to one of their lowest point totals of the season, Portland State relied on solid play from their floor leader, Claire Faucher, who had 19 points and three assists. Kahle chipped in 14 points of her own, and freshman guard Lexi Bishop added 10 points.

The Vikings were able to capitalize on their solid defensive play by dominating the glass, collecting 48 rebounds to Weber State’s 38. Senior wing Delaney Conway had her best rebounding game of the season, snatching 14 boards, including six offensive rebounds.

“Delaney was probably our unsung hero tonight,” Murrell said. “Her defense and rebounding were the keys to the game.”

With their third consecutive win, the Vikings remain tied for first place in the Big Sky Conference, and will look to solidify their place atop the conference standings against Idaho State Saturday afternoon.
