Wim Wiewel will take the helm as Portland State’s next president later this year, the State Board of Higher Education announced Friday morning.
Wiewel, the provost and vice president of University of Baltimore, was the final candidate left vying for the presidency after the months-long search process. Even so, many board members and community members felt Wiewel was the best-qualified candidate for the job.
Before his stint at University of Baltimore, Wiewel spent time at the University of Illinois, Chicago as the dean of two different schools. His academic background focuses on urban planning.
Wiewel is originally from the Netherlands but emigrated to the U.S. after visiting when he was a teenager.
