Portland State to host state’s only law school fair Tuesday

For students interested in a legal career, Portland State will host the seventh annual law school fair this Tuesday, with representatives from over 60 laws schools from across the country attending.

Representatives and deans of admission from law schools will be available to meet for one-on-one advising with students. Notable schools scheduled to attend include Harvard University, Pepperdine University and Boston College.

Local schools Willamette University, University of Oregon and Lewis and Clark School of Law will also be represented at the event.

“This is a special opportunity for pre-law students to come together and seek information that is integral to their future,” said Terra Bliss, co-president of PSU’s Pre-Law Society, which is co-hosting the event. “We want to support this endeavor as much as we can.”

Immediately following the fair, the Pre-Law Society will host a “Law School Admission Process” panel discussion, offering a variety of information about applying to law school, including how files are reviewed, as well as information about the Law School Admissions Test, personal statements and letters of recommendation.

The event will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 228 of Smith Memorial Student Union.

Oregon University System enrollment hits record high this year

Enrollment at Portland State has reached a record high of 24,999 students, as of the fourth week of fall term 2007, according to a press release from the Oregon University System (OUS). This mark is a 2.9 percent increase from the enrollment figure from fall term 2006, which amounts to a total of 715 more students enrolled at Portland State.

Freshmen make up 1,762 of the newly enrolled students at PSU. This figure is about 2,000 fewer students than new students at either the University of Oregon or Oregon State University this fall. The majority of the students who enrolled at Portland State this term were transfers, with just over 2,500 students.

There are a total of 4,202 newly enrolled students at PSU as of this term, but because a number of students are graduating or leaving the university, overall enrollment increased by only 715 students.

The OUS, which comprises seven universities in Oregon, reached a record-high 82,249 students for fall 2007, a 1.5 percent enrollment increase from fall 2006. The total enrollment increase for the OUS is nearly 2,500 students.
