Candidates for SALP director start visits this week

Portland State is hosting question and answer sessions with four candidates for director of Student Activities and Leadership Programs, to fill the position after the departure of former SALP Director Tonantzin Oceguera last July.

In short

Construction for TriMet’s new MAX Green Line along Southwest Sixth Avenue between Southwest Jackson and Harrison streets will finish by the end of the day Thursday, Feb. 29.

Men’s basketball preview

On average, junior guard Josh Akognon puts up 20 points a game for the Titans and is only five three-point field goals short of setting a new single-season school record. Junior point guard Jeremiah Dominguez leads the Big Sky in steals per game (two), free-throw percentage (.846) and three-point field goals made per game (2.46).

Thrown toward success

The first time Vikings track and field star Caressa Sims competed in the weight throw, she hurled the 20-pound ball just 26 feet.

Editorial: When will it end?

The continuing construction near Portland State appears to swell with each passing day. In the past weeks, trucks, dumpsters, cones and signs have inundated the street outside the Ondine, altering Sixth Avenue to look more like one of the unkempt and disorderly freshman residences than the bustling street of college students and urbanites it is.

Letters

I have some generous but unsolicited advice for the ASPSU presidential candidates: campaign on the return of Taco Bell to campus. Voter turnout will increase dramatically, so it is a win for both you and for students. Propose adding an all-hours walk-through Taco Bell to the side of Smith. Its value menu will help students cope with the rising cost of food and help transform our commuter school into a destination eatery.

The Lookout

Fidel Castro announced this week that he doesn’t want to be president of Cuba anymore. The 81-year-old handed the reigns over to younger brother Raul in July 2006 when he fell ill, and after Castro’s statement this week, the government is scrambling to “elect” a new president soon. Lil’ Castro seems to be the favorite.

Rock ‘N’ Roll Apocalypse

With their eclectic melange of crunchy guitars, Southern rock roots, booze and sarcasm, Ferret Records stalwart Every Time I Die might be the kind of hardcore band that could make you want to crack a joke while poisoning someone. Now, after releasing their fifth album The Big Dirty in September, ETID is taking on nationwide headlining duties with the seventh annual Take Action Tour, including a stop in Portland next Monday. The Vanguard recently caught up with the band’s frontman Keith Buckley by phone, and he gladly espoused on the band’s music, drunken karaoke and the transcendent influence of Southern rock.

Men’s basketball preview

Junior forward Jabril Banks is one of the best low post players in the Big Sky, averaging 12.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. The Vikings will counter with senior center Scott Morrison, who is averaging 11.8 points to go with 6.3 rebounds and two blocks a game. Morrison had a career-high 23 points versus Northern Colorado in January.

Coach Bone: beyond ‘coachspeak’

After a disappointing turnout at the Stott Center Thursday evening prompted head coach Ken Bone to say his team needed to “manufacture momentum” at home, Viking roundball fans packed the old Stott Center gym to capacity Saturday, as Portland State beat rival Weber State 76-73.
