Feel like there’s nothing worth doing on campus? What if you could see one of the most exciting bands in the country perform live for about as much as a…
Shy girls breathe new life into portland music scene
It’s amazing the sort of things you come across when you run internet searches for “Shy Girls.” I’ll say this, if you try this at work, be sure to play…
Signifying history
Despite being examined under the lens in various tomes, both academic and otherwise, ‘90s hip-hop (commonly referred to as “rap”) was a nascent art form that had not been considered…
Good eatin’
Lets talk about food carts. I know you’ve heard of them. Maybe you’ve seen that food cart show Eat Street on the Cooking Channel, or Anthony Bourdain’s many segments devoted to the art of the food truck. Its undeniable that the Portland food cart scene is a lively one, so chances are you’ve been to a couple.
‘TEDsex Talk’ tackles taboo topics
Last Thursday, the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center on Northwest Ninth Avenue hosted Portland’s first “TEDsex Talk.”
PSU Chamber Choir wins international award
Portland State is now home to an internationally recognized chamber choir. After a long journey from Portland to Gorzia, Italy (located near the border of Slovenia), PSU’s Chamber Choir was awarded the Grand Prix at the 52nd annual Seghizzi International Choral Competition.
Like a homemade mix tape, but better
It’s never easy to predict the future. I’ve seen and heard a lot of local bands, and in the last year I’ve had the pleasure to be able to sit and talk with a couple of them. First ‘TEDsex’ event to host local sexperts
“Sexuality is a fundamental part of the human experience,” Forrester said, “but we don’t really talk about it, and I want to—and by all the RSVPs I’m getting, I think a lot of other people do too.” The “TEDsex” talk in Portland is set to feature three local “sex-perts” who will present in-depth 15-minute educational lectures. The session will end with community dialogue.
Endless summer eats
It’s summer term. You want to graduate on time (say, in five years instead of seven) so you load yourself up with as many credits as possible. eanwhile, you’re subjected on a daily basis to seeing pictures in your Facebook
feed of that guy from last term’s Spanish class on vacation in Machu Picchu. But even if you’re too busy to go on an expensive trip, there are some places where you can get at least a slice of summer in that hour break between classes.
Art or vandalism?
We’ve all seen it. The stickers that grace the backs of street signs. The striking murals covering rows of abandoned warehouses in inner Southeast. Street art is a force of cultural significance the world over. I found myself wondering, though—what is the state of street art in the City of Portland?
World Record aspirations take root
In addition to being “weird” and having a vibrant coffee scene, Portland has a reputation for being a city full of tree huggers. Local organizations like Friends of Trees, Hoyt Arboretum and Treecology Inc. decided to put that reputation to the ultimate test—the Guinness World Records.
