Step inside the quaint hat shop known as Pinkham Millinery located on Southwest Broadway and you are instantly transformed to a time of classic style oozing substance. I thought of ’50s Manhattan, or even turn-of-the-century Paris, but then again, I am a lover of hats. But according to Dayna Pinkham, the owner of Pinkham Millinery, I am not the only one.
Hats off to Pinkham Millinery

Everyday it seems like another national daily newspaper is scaling back circulation, raising prices or cutting staff. This, for the most part, has been seen as the beginning of the end for print news. But it doesn’t need to be. Most of the newspapers making these changes, which are seemingly in effect to ultimately maximize profits, do not understand the actual cost.

If the last presidential election has been any clue, most college students turn to satirical shows such as The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and Saturday Night Live to get their campaign news and a few laughs, it is no surprise that most of these students check Democrat or Independent on their ballots. What is surprising though, is that this current campaign has fostered much discourse through these mainstream media programs with the conservative candidates.

It’s nothing new to say that Britney Spears goes against feminist ideals. By the 1:37 minute mark on Spears’ new music video, “Womanizer,” which is supposed to hail her comeback into mainstream pop trash, she isn’t using her new status for a transformation. She is not Madonna. I found it difficult to reconcile her one-word lyrics with her actions in the video.

Sarah Palin was in Los Angeles last Saturday to drum up more support for the McCain campaign in one of the largest Democratic states and, apparently, to advocate for feminists. She did not succeed. At one point in her speech, which was introduced by the National Organization for Women Los Angeles Chapter President Shelly Mandell, Palin said she was reading her Starbucks cup “quote of the day” by former secretary of state Madeline Albright, and she said–with the caveat, “now she said it, I didn’t”–“There’s a place in hell reserved for women who don’t support other women.”

Recently an outcry of criticism has been aimed at The Oregonian for distributing a DVD with the daily paper called Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West that clearly contains anti-Islamic rhetoric. The Clarion Group, the organization that produced the DVD, is a “non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to educate Americans about issues of national security,” according to the group’s Web site.
Party in the Park: Don’t miss it
Every year during new student week, most of the student organizations and groups get together in the Park Blocks and have a party. Luring in freshmen, transfer students and generally people who need to get a life outside of the classroom, Party in the Park is designed to engage students in one of the 150 or so student groups and to become a part of the PSU community a bit. Plus, there is free food, a chance to win goofy prizes and the camaraderie of those who have similar interests. Here is a sample of groups that are going to be in attendance.

As this is the orientation issue, and as the opinion editor, I think it is my privilege, nay, my obligation to orient (get it?) you to the world of PSU media, particularly its newspapers.
A renter’s manifesto
The history of all hitherto existing society is a history of renter versus landlord. It has existed for millennia, and the modern society that has emerged from the ashes of the past has not done away with these renter’s antagonisms. We believe that all renters have rights, and to that end renters have assembled this manifesto–a renter’s manifesto. Comrades unite!
Northwest Portland
Northwest is the Mecca of the fashion elite in Portland. Situated close to downtown, which means walking access to school, shops and the everyday bustle, Portland’s Northwest district is the place where a lot of students, affluent and thrifty alike, live and hang out.
On that point – a weekly column examining media
First off, let me say that, on a whole, blogs are a great addition to the media world. Blogs provide alternative voices, catch corporations in their corruption and are a great tool for getting information about events, changes to policy and knowledge essential to having a well-informed democratic society out into the world for further discourse.
