Diversity proposal gains support of student senate

An initiative that would require students to enroll in diversity courses to graduate has recently undergone changes in an effort to make sure the diversity requirement would be applied to all students–not just those in University Studies. The Diversity Initiative, created by the NAACP at PSU student group six months ago, has yet to be discussed by the faculty senate, a step that is necessary for it to go into effect.

International treasure

Although separated by thousands of miles, both the men’s basketball squad and new Portland State recruit Paul Guede are coming off their best seasons ever. While the Vikings were taking the Big Sky Conference by storm, earning their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, Guede was earning his stripes as a solid all-around player at Tallahassee Community College in Florida.

March for unity

Several hundred people rallied for immigrants rights and marched in celebration of International Workers’ Day and May Day yesterday afternoon in the South Park Blocks. The event, put on by the Portland Immigrants Rights Coalition, has become an annual tradition on May 1, with many gathering near Park Avenue and Main Street for a rally featuring music and speakers, before engaging in a march around the downtown area.
