Swinging sweetest toward the end

Despite struggling with inconsistent play throughout its season, Portland State put all of the pieces together last week en route to winning the Vikings’ fourth Big Sky Championship in the past six seasons. Sophomore Hannah Bews’ best collegiate outing of her career, and freshman Alexia Brown and junior Kayla Morinaga’s top-10 finishes fueled the Vikings to a surprising victory in the conference tournament, earning the team a trip to the NCAA West Regional Golf Championship.

Gridiron Judgment Day

While this weekend’s NFL Draft brings anticipation for football fans everywhere, the happenings of the next few days could mean the difference between achieving or narrowly missing a lifelong dream for three former Vikings: Brennan Carvalho, Jordan Senn and Tremayne Kirkland.

Lackluster results, bright future

A tumultuous season for the Portland State men’s tennis came to a fitting conclusion this weekend as the Vikings dropped their final two matches of the season, losing to Sonoma State 6-1 and Nevada 7-0.

Faucher tabbed All-American

After leading the Vikings to their best season since joining the Division I ranks and setting numerous records along the way, point guard Claire Faucher recently was named Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press.

Spotlight Athlete of the week

Coming off a doubles victory against Boise State last weekend, freshman Anya Dalkin’s tennis season looks to be on the upswing. In her first year in the South Park Blocks, the Tucson, Ariz., native has compiled a 9-11 overall with a 4-3 mark against Big Sky squads. She will have an opportunity to improve that mark in the near future, as the Vikings are scheduled to compete in three matches over the weekend.

Blooming in spring

The arrival of spring has brought new life into the tennis program at Portland State, as both the men’s and women’s tennis teams picked up victories over the weekend. After falling to the host Broncos in the opening round of the Boise State Invitational, the Portland State women rebounded and defeated Utah State 5-2 to finish their weekend on a positive note.

Similar to many college freshmen, Lacey Pflibsen was facing the difficult decision of choosing a school just one year ago. Pflibsen, from San Diego County, was the star tennis player at her high school, but she went vastly un-recruited amid the talent-rich area of Southern California.
