Going home to the closet

The trials of coming out

For many students, college life involves a lot of introspection—a lot of “finding yourself.” For younger students, especially those right out of high school who choose to live on campus/away from home, college may be their first experience with independence, away from the protection and supervision of family.

Sexual abuse of female inmates

Recent cases show that inmates need advocacy

Although the phrase “abuse of power comes as no surprise” is a bit cliché in terms of political and social happenings, it is spot-on when one thinks about the way certain prisons treat their inmates.

America and cyberweapons— uncharted territory

Pentagon’s decision is necessary and inevitable

Do you worry about credit card theft? What about someone stealing your identity?

Well, despite these strikes becoming ever more frequent (my mom got hit twice in the same month), these occurrences are just scratching the surface of cyber attacks, and far be it from me to trust the government with spy technology, but this time it might be warranted—maybe even overdue.

A ballsy move

Man strips at PDX airport to protest against invasion of privacy

There’s a fine line between proving a point and going too far. For John Brennan, who stripped at a routine TSA screening to protest their lack of respect for people’s privacy, it was an easy line to cross. He is now awaiting trial for public indecency.

ASPSU elections board to be dissolved under new Constitution

Amendment would combine elections board with judicial board, forming one entity

The Associated Students of Portland State University elections board was created in order to serve as a check and balance on the other legislative and executive systems. According to the ASPSUwebsite, the board is “crucial,” as its ultimate goal is to ensure proper conduct during the election and voting processes. Now, pending approved changes made to the ASPSU Constitution, the elections board will be combined with the judicial board.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

ASPSU’s new structure will encourage more effective student advocacy

As a result of high rates of student leader turnover, the proposal to restructure ASPSU was put to a vote on Sunday. The result? A 16-1 victory for the Vision and Reform Committee.

VetSuccess program brings veteran counselor to PSU

It’s about time

Some have heard the explosions of bombs, others worked on billion dollar machinery; some were stationed in Kandahar, others in Delaware. They are administrators, mechanics and engineers, and one in seven have seen live combat. They are the diverse group of veterans who have served our country, and in growing numbers, they are our fellow students.

A half-decent plan A

PSU insurance overhaul good for most, but not all

The whole idea behind insurance is a bit convoluted: You shouldn’t have to suffer financial ruin if you’re sick or hurt; therefore, you should have insurance to help lessen the costs and keep you from bankruptcy when you’re forced out of work or into a hospital. In order to get this insurance, however, you’ll need to pay exorbitant amounts of money or rely on your employers or parents (or your parents’ employers).

Take Back the Night

Event at PSU raises awareness about sexual violence

On April 26, as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Women’s Resource Center and Portland Women’s Crisis Line co-sponsored this year’s Take Back the Night (Bike Back the Night, for those who participated on their bicycles) here at PSU. Take Back the Night is an annual international event that seeks to raise awareness about the prevalence and impact of sexual violence in communities.
