For most students experiencing their journey through college, one of the terrifying inevitabilities to face is the world of dating. Whether it be rubbing elbows at the movies, drunkenly hooking up at a Halloween party or making eyes at the library, dating is something that permeates our lives and makes us weak in the knees.
We’ll think about it—scout’s honor
May is always an interesting month. May 1 marks International Workers’ Day, May 5 is Cinco de Mayo, and now May 20 might begin to mark something interesting as well.
Block Talk
“How do you feel about smoking in the Park Blocks?”
Growing up without benchmarks
I moved to upstate New York a few weeks ago to begin a doctoral program at Cornell University. So I find myself living in the Finger Lakes, starting over again at 25. I’ve made a couple of large moves before—one across the continent to go to university, the other back to Portland to change careers—both of which have taught me how to start over.
Not so Real World: Portland
Last November, back when the 28th season of MTV’s The Real World had just finished filming, I wrote an irascible article centered on how all the cameras were getting in the way of one of my usual haunts, Pizza Schmizza Pub and Grub.
Boston bombing reporting an embarrassment
The Boston bombings marred the landscape of our country with terror yet again, and as we move further away from April 15 we are left with a lingering awareness of the evil that lives in people—and, at the same time, the overwhelming good in others. Pictures and stories of true heroes will remain with us.
Background checks for guns? Nope, sorry
In a 54–46 vote, the United States Senate shot down all new background check requirements for gun-buying purposes. Astounding. I don’t understand what’s controversial about requiring people to go through a thorough background check before allowing them to buy a device capable of killing people. The resistance doesn’t make sense, especially when, according to a CNN/ORC International poll, 86 percent of Americans support implementing universal background checks.
Unrealistic expectations
In case you haven’t noticed, it’s election time here at Portland State. This year’s student government election could be a monumental one, because there’s a proposal on the ballot to adopt a new constitution or amend the current one. The new constitution proposes changes that could greatly affect how the Associated Students of Portland State University operates.
The Lady’s legacy
Death settles nothing. It turns out the lights on a life, but a putting-to-rest never puts what’s done to rest.
To quote Faulkner: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” The vortex of self and society that we call “now” is only the end-state of past actions.
Farther and farther beyond
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…” Made famous by George Lucas’ Star Wars films, that phrase has managed to captivate audiences worldwide for decades and has become emblematic of our space fantasies. Those films, along with others of their ilk, mirror the fascination we denizens of this little green-and-blue planet have with the worlds above and below us.
Healthy eaters suck
There’s an unglamorous sentiment going around that nobody wants to talk about but that many of us closet cake-eaters are feeling: We hate being told to eat healthy. Yes, that’s right. I’m unabashedly going to say that I don’t want to eat better. I want to eat doughnuts covered in sprinkles; I want to devour bacon and too much cheese; and I want to enjoy chocolate chip cookie dough by the spoonful.
