As fall draws to a close and winter term looms, those students interested in football can take solace in the fact that their holiday vacation will end on a positive note—the commencement of NFL playoff action. With only five more weeks left in the regular season, there is still quite a bit of room left for some upsets and unpredictable divisional showdowns.
Men’s basketball drops third straight in Stillwater
The Portland State men’s basketball team continues to struggle away from the Stott Center this year. Road losses over the past week against the University of Portland and Oklahoma State University dropped the Vikings to 1-3 early in the 2012–13 season.
Women’s basketball finding its way
The Portland State women’s basketball team came out of their non-conference weekend with a loss to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a win over Butler University. The team is now 4-1 this season and is embracing its new identity as a strong defensive team.
Muddy days at Portland Meadows
Oregon Championship Day closed at Portland Meadows on Nov. 18, a grey and waterlogged afternoon. Conditions on the dirt track were sloppy—a fact learned the hard way by jockey Anne Sanguinetti. During race four, a one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies, her horse took a wrong step and threw her to the ground.

Mush puppies
While “dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh” may be the seasonal tagline, not many of us own horses that we can hitch up for a leisurely jaunt to the grocery store.
Irish on top again
Notre Dame is one of the most storied and polarizing names in all of sport. Hyperbole is their stock in trade, and there isn’t much room in the discussion for the subtlety and nuance of fine writing. I don’t really have an angle or an original take on Notre Dame football—I’m about 70 years too late to add anything fresh to the mythology.
Lillard leads the way for Blazers
As soon as the season began, the Portland Trail Blazers found themselves faced with an uphill climb. A young team with very little experience would be put to the test against the likes of San Antonio, Oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers in their first 12 games, with a seven-game road trip looming after that. Fans knew the season could very easily get out of hand.
Beckham’s last stand
When David Beckham signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy in January 2007, Major League Soccer had been languishing, an afterthought among North America’s professional sports leagues. Six years later, as the league wraps up its 17th season and Beckham prepares for his final MLS game, the league is healthier financially than at any point in its history. The English superstar’s effect on the growth of soccer in the United States, which has been a topic of much debate since he arrived, will now begin anew with the impending retirement of one of the most recognizable names in the sport.
In the Nic of time
Winterhawks fans got a much more suspenseful game than expected on Friday, as Portland headed into its contest with the Kootenay Ice equipped with the WHL’s best record, while Kootenay had one of the league’s worst. The Ice played well above their record, however, and were either tied or in the lead for most of the game.
US women’s soccer tour hits Portland
Soccer rolls into Portland on Wednesday, Nov. 28 as the U.S. women’s national team squares off against the Republic of Ireland in the sixth game of its fan tribute tour. This will be the first time the two teams have played since 2008, when the U.S. beat Ireland 2-0 at Toyota Park in Illinois. The team has been on tour since Sept. 1.
