In January, Debra Gwartney, assistant professor of English at Portland State, had articles appear in two major local publications. Her article “Runaway Bus” was published in the January 2007 issue of Portland Monthly, and a review for Web of Deceit, a new book by Barry Lando, a former investigative producer of 60 Minutes, ran in the Jan. 14 issue of The Oregonian.
Gwartney is also a co-editor of the recently published book Home Ground: Language for an American Landscape. In 2006, the book appeared on National Public Radio’s best books of the year list and was selected by The New York Times as one of the best gift books. The Oregonian named it the best book of the year related to the Northwest.
Home Ground was published in October and features essays from a variety of poets and writers on the words and definitions that describe American land and waters.
Gwartney currently teaches writing classes at the university and will be guest speaking in Smith Memorial Student Union on April 24 as part of the PSU winter/spring author series.
