This past weekend at the Cowgirl Desert Invitational, the Portland State women’s golf team shot their way to a ninth place finish led by junior Britney Yada, who tied for second overall on the final day of the tournament. The tournament was the fourth in the past month for the reigning 2010–11 Big Sky-winning Vikings and marked the end of the golf team’s fall season.

Yada shot a score of 70 on the final day after only shooting a 79 and 82 on the first day, a huge improvement that bumped her up from 34th to 17th place. Senior standout Tiffany Schoning tied Yada for 17th place and sophomore Samantha Webb finished in 46th place. However, Yada carried the final round, shooting her best round of the season on Sunday.

“It was really nice to see [Yada] have a good round going into our off-season,” head coach Kathleen Takaishi said. “It should give her some confidence going into this winter.”

Portland State finished in ninth place overall for the three-round tournament, a major improvement from the team’s tenth place position after the first day of play. The Vikings shot a 341-321-316 for an overall score of 961. San Diego State finished the tournament in first place with an overall score of 888. Seven Big Sky schools participated in the tournament and the Vikings finished in 3rd place of those seven schools.

Portland State continues the season in February at the Wildcat Invitational in Arizona. The spring season is the major part of the team’s schedule leading up to the conference championships at the end of April.

“I’m excited about the spring season because we have a lot of youth and its going to be fun to watch them improve and get better,” Takaishi said. “We will definitely be more successful in the spring.”
