High hopes: Cory McCaffrey will be missed on the field. McCaffrey suffered an injury he hopes will not affect his future in football.

Despite playing only five games in 2011, Cory McCaffrey was selected to the first team All-Big Sky Conference in a postseason vote by the league coaches. McCaffrey led the nation in rushing and scoring before his Achilles injury in mid-October. He is the most successful running back in Oregon history.

McCaffrey’s senior season with the Portland State football team ended in tragic fashion. McCaffrey suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in week six of the season.

“This is it for me, as far as my college career goes. In the future we will see how [the injury] heals,” McCaffrey said. “The main thing that I can see is different is that the team has so much more energy and chemistry this year. I expect big things from this program, and it’s only a matter of time.”

McCaffrey ended 2011 with 731 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Despite starting only five conference games, he finished fourth among players with the most rushing yards in the conference.

McCaffrey helped Portland State lead the Big Sky Conference and finished eighth in the nation in rushing yards per game (247.8). In his final year, the Vikings set a new school record for total rushing yards (2,726).

In 2010, McCaffrey started all 10 games for the Vikings. He rushed for a total of 1,275 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. He made it to the All-Big Sky Conference team in 2010 as well.

In his senior year at Portland State, McCaffrey played his part to help the Vikings finish with a 7-4 overall record and 5-3 record in the Big Sky Conference. They finished third among nine teams in the conference. After four successive years with a losing record, the Vikings became the most improved team in the country in 2011.
