Benefit assists local artist injured in car accident

The Portland music community will be uniting in order to raise money for local injured artist Stevie Rae Urwin Friday Oct. 14 at the Wonder Ballroom.

“When she was hit by a truck in May, I had an idea that I wanted to put on a concert for her,” said Urwin’s mother Tammy, who is organizing the event. “I did not know whether she would live or die, and I figured either way I wanted to do something spectacular for my daughter because she is a spectacular person and a talented artist.”

The benefit will feature several local bands including She’s Not Dead, All Falls Through, One Hour Newport and In Bloom.

She’s Not Dead is a local all-female rock ‘n’ roll group. The band members, who all happen to be teenagers, play their music—a mix of punk, alternative and hard rock—throughout the state.

“Tammy contacted me because Stevie is a huge Green Day fan, and she heard that Kira Nesser of She’s Not Dead was related to Adrienne Nesser, who is the wife of Billie Joe from Green Day,” said Mark Nesser, manager of She’s Not Dead.

Nesser also hinted that Stevie will receive a special gift at the show.

All Falls Through hails from Hillsboro. Band members C.J. Jessie and Brandon create a sound similar to that of popular pop-punk bands of the ’90s. The band has had the honor of playing with several big-name bands including Bowling for Soup and The Ataris.

One Hour Newport and In Bloom are two bands that also bring along a high energy, pop-punk sound. For a good time that benefits a good cause, make sure not to miss this show.

Urwin was hit by a car while walking her dog in May, according to police reports. The 15-year-old driver had a provisional driver’s license but did not have an adult in the vehicle with him at the time. No criminal charges were filed after the incident.

Urwin was taken to the hospital and remained in a coma for 10 days after sustaining major permanent injuries to her brain and body. She is still recovering.

Urwin was 19 at the time, which means that she is now responsible for all her medical bills.

“She has accumulated approximately $350,000 in hospital bills and it keeps accumulating as she goes for weekly physical therapy,” Tammy Urwin said.

The doors open at 7 p.m. The show is expected to run from 8 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are available online in advance for $10 and can also be purchased at the door for $12.

Proceeds from the concert go directly to Urwin. Information on ways to donate to her recovery can be found at PrayForStevieRae.bbnow.org
