49ers and Smith come to terms

Former Utah quarterback, Alex Smith, agreed to a six-year, $51 million dollar contract with the San Francisco 49ers Monday. The number one pick in this year’s draft will make an average of $8.25 million a year and is expected to help resurrect one of the NFL’s most storied franchises.

Wood back on DL

Chicago Cubs starter Kerry Wood went on the DL for the second time this year on Monday after encountering more issues with his right shoulder. Sporting a 3-3 record with a 4.67 ERA, Wood has been plagued with injury this season and will be demoted to the bullpen upon his return to the team.

Jasikevicius signs with Indy

Sarunas Jasikevicius signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Indiana Pacers this week. Jasikevicius was widely recruited by many NBA teams, including the Cavaliers and the Blazers. Citing his desire to win an NBA championship, Jasikevicius ultimately chose the Pacers and their talented, young core of players, including Jermaine O’Neal, Ron Artest and Stephan Jackson.

Bonzi to Sacramento

Ex-Blazer Bonzi Wells was traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Sacramento Kings this week, though the deal won’t be finalized until the NBA seals its collective bargaining agreement. The trade sends Greg Ostertag from the Kings to Utah. Utah will send Kirk Snyder and Raul Lopez to the Grizzlies, who also will receive Bobby Jackson from the Kings.
