Finally, as the last days of rain drizzle away and we stride forward into endless days of sunshine it’s time to start enjoying the things we truly love. And when it comes to true love, not just a summer fling thing, my heart burns furiously for tasty treats!
As an individual who personally subsists on a diet composed of about 85 percent ice cream, I’ve found I’m quite the authority on this summer treat. And while the fear of consuming so much that I will develop lactose intolerance or diabetes does loom in the back of my mind, it hardly slows down my full-throttle binge during the summer months.
When it comes to ice cream in general, I’m easy to please. But when it comes to shocking my mouth into a new semi-orgasmic taste sensation, Cool Moon Creamery has a monopoly on my taste buds. Located on the corner of NW 11th Ave. and Johnson St. in Portland’s Pearl District, Cool Moon Creamery serves up all-natural, made in-house, absolutely awesome ice cream every day of the week.
Staying true to the weirdness of Portland, Cool Moon is notorious for concocting new flavors that are enough to make Ben and his pal Jerry feel ashamed for their lack of creativity.
Obviously Portlanders love their beer, and I dare you to find a scoop of ice cream more satisfying than Cool Moon’s Lemon Hefeweizen. That’s right. It’s beer—in ice cream. It is such a perfect lovechild of sweet and tart lemony deliciousness and subtle hoppy flavors that makes this ice cream one of my favorite consumable items on the planet.
Cool Moon also regularly serves up flavors such as Thai Iced Tea, Horchata Cookie, Spicy Thai Peanut and Kulfi to please the tongues of any person looking for something more exotic than chocolate or vanilla (not that chocolate ice cream can’t be exciting). In fact, Cool Moon revamps chocolate into Chocolate Zinfandel! That’s right. It’s wine—in ice cream! I really like how these Cool Moon people think.
Everything they serve is concieved and created right on sight. They use nothing but the most simple and stellar ingredients to forge their frozen works of art. And their staff of friendly scoopers is pretty much the most adorable group of people you’ve ever seen. I’ve yet to dive into a flavor of theirs that I haven’t swooned over.
It’s easy to feel like a kid again when you’re lapping up Cool Moon. Not to mention it’s conveniently located across the street from Jamison Square Park, where you can dip your feet in the fountain to cool off or just enjoy your time watching kids fall down in the fountain like any good-natured person does.
I can only imagine that soon Portland will have to open a rehab center for people addicted to Cool Moon, but until then, I encourage you to go out and have a scoop or two for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, because any time of day is the right time for
this ice cream.
