Preventative steps are key when it comes to taking care of your health. Checking in with your body, with doctors, family, et cetera, can sometimes be the first step toward healing or possibly catching a potentially life-threatening disease in its early stages.
For dog lovers only
Over the summer, the “You Should Message If…” section of my now-defunct OkCupid profile (go ahead and laugh, then remember that you have one, too) once said, “you like dogs; I don’t have one, but dogs are cool.” While that profile is now disabled and, more or less, a thing of the past, the dog thing rings true.
Green times
Like leaves falling from trees only to disappear into nothingness, the environment has been relatively absent from major news reporting lately. While it’s true that there are bigger issues going on, nature and how we treat it should be a more important aspect of our everyday lives.
A pintful of risks
If life were like the movies, we’d all find and follow a certain trajectory during our college years. Meet the friends you’ll keep for the rest of your life, have a great dorm/roommate experience, fall in love, fall out of love, fall in love again (and again), marry your college sweetheart and, of course, party the entire time while still getting awesome grades.
Same discrimination, different year
Last year, Washington state did a really great thing. The population came together to legalize same-sex marriage. While this is truly wonderful, it comes at a time when the majority of the country will not recognize a same-sex couple’s union as marriage, opting instead for “civil union,” a term riddled with preconceived notions and societal tropes.
All green on the southwestern front
Turning over a green leaf isn’t always easy, but it’s something that Portland State does over and over again, year after year. Our school is constantly looking for new ways to be more eco-friendly, as well as revitalizing old methods to stay current with the technology of the day.
Wranglin’ and rhymin’
In case you don’t already know this from my previous columns, I like words. Language is a really neat thing, and because of its constant evolution it never stays the same for long. (Except apostrophe rules—those don’t change, so please stop pretending they don’t exist.)
Easy ‘A’
Ivy-covered buildings, secret societies and preppy blazers are probably a few of the things that come to mind when we think of Harvard and other “Ivy League” schools. Those are probably followed closely by images of money and ideas of the wit and intelligence needed to compete on the advanced academic level these schools supposedly occupy.
Ignore the bad rep
Balancing student life with keeping yourself healthy is no easy task. Luckily for us Portland State students, the Center for Student Health and Counseling exists. While it’s been rightfully criticized in the past for long wait-times and fees for uninsured students, SHAC does do a lot of good and provides relatively quick and helpful service to PSU’s large student population.
What is alt lit?
When you’re in high school and all your friends are talking about what they’re going to do with their lives, college majors are usually a key topic. What you study at the college level generally has a pretty significant role in dictating your career options, right? Right.
Sexy survivors?
Victoria’s Secret is one of those enterprises that generally needs to be looked at from a very critical perspective. The company is guilty of cultural appropriation, perpetuating negative body image and fetishization.
