Amber Rozcicha has covered a lot of ground as a Viking. She came to Portland from Newberg, Ore. in 2009 and immediately began making her mark. Rozcicha excelled at 800 meters, finishing with a time of 2 minutes, 16.73 seconds at the University of Washington Indoor Preview in her freshman season, and was the Vikings’ top finisher in three races for the cross country team that year. Her best long distance result was a 13th place showing at the 4,800-meter Pre’s Trail Run event.
The flickering torch
Growing up, I hated Michael Jordan. And I regret it deeply.
The career of the “Greatest of All Time” is an exceedingly rare and precious thing. By definition, there can only be one in all of history, and, arrogant though this line of thinking is, Jordan’s probably was that career—it casts a deep and seemingly inescapable shadow over anyone attempting to eclipse his accomplishments. Even Halley’s Comet will stroll through the neighborhood every 75 years or so; the greatest basketball career in history has, in all likelihood, come and gone forever.
PSU football falls in Bozeman
Six minutes into the first quarter of their matchup with Montana State University, Portland State tailback DJ Adams broke free and raced 69 yards for a touchdown to cut the Bobcat lead to 10-7.
Vikings roll at home
With a tremendous team effort on both ends of the floor, the Portland State women’s basketball team kicked off their regular season with a 55-35 win over non-conference competitor George Fox University.

Young guns
I wrote extensively about the role of rookies in the 2012 Major League Baseball season in a previous Between the Horns piece entitled “Year of the Rookie.” I highlighted the accomplishments of Yu Darvish, Bryce Harper, Mike Trout and a few others, but perhaps I didn’t go into enough detail about their youth, or their nascent potential.
PSU Kickboxing Club
In the Portland State Kickboxing Club, students bring an assortment of martial arts disciplines together as they build confidence and learn self-defense. The group focuses mainly on muay thai and boxing but also works in aspects of capoeira, tae kwon do, kung fu and krav maga.
Ascending new heights
My first experience indoor bouldering was ridiculous. I felt completely out of shape. My fingers burned, my forearms swelled and my shoulders ached. I grew blisters in places on my hands I didn’t think could blister. Unlike traditional top-rope rock climbing, bouldering doesn’t use any safety ropes. I watched other climbers skitter up the walls like Spiderman while I clung to the holds like Mary Jane awaiting rescue.
Tough weekend for the Vikings
With only one weekend left in regular season play, Portland State volleyball is now one game behind new conference leader Idaho State University. The Vikings slipped from their first-place position following a shutout loss to the University of North Dakota on Thursday, then got back to their winning ways on Saturday as they took out the University of Northern Colorado in five grueling sets.
A promising start for Blazers
With a record below .500 to start the season, the Portland Trail Blazers are, technically speaking, losers. And yet it doesn’t feel that way.
Cross country runs with the best
Portland State’s cross country team went up against some of the best runners on the West Coast on Friday when they competed in the NCAA West Regional Championship in Seattle. Senior Amber Rozcicha paced the women’s team, while the men were led by freshman Neil Seibert.
